Vivian is a vibrant, kind young woman who has had her share of struggles. She made the difficult decision, while growing up in a small town in Central America, to move to the Philadelphia area with few belongings and barely speaking any English.
She entered foster care in her late teens and demonstrated maturity and grace while balancing the demands of school, work, and pregnancy. She earned a high school diploma, got an apartment, a job and gave birth to a beautiful son, now almost 2. With the help of Tabor, she has received services through our Adolescent Initiative Program where she participated in Life Skills classes, the Car Match Program and the Mentoring Program , through which she has a Community Mentor and College Mentor.
This September, Vivian takes the next step in furthering her education as she attends Bucks County Community College to pursue a certification in Allied Health. Furthermore, she has worked hard to achieve fluency in the English language and is now an asset to our health community as a bilingual employee.
Each time I meet with Vivian, whether it’s to give her a tour of the community college, help her with her enrollment forms or talk with her about her community mentor, I am continually impressed by her drive, work ethic and love for her son. She holds fast to the belief that we should always strive to make ourselves a little bit better each day and keep looking forward. As she embarks on a new educational journey, Tabor will continue to support her with our services and celebrate how far she’s come!
“Tabor Services has been a great help to me because they help me in a lots of ways. For example, they helped me to get the driving lessons done, to be able to get my driver’s license, and then they helped me to get my own car and to be able to work and take my baby to his doctor appointments. I really took advantage of everything that Tabor offered me, including [Life Skills] classes…which teach you how to become more independent. All in all, I can say [to] every teenager that has Tabor Services’ help, [is to] take advantage of it, now that you can!” –Vivian
